INJ-205 Domestic,Import CAN Controller Area Network Diagnostics

The class starts with a history of the CAN protocol, when it was developed and why. The advantages of CAN over the other networks it has commonly replaced. We will show examples of how when there are multiple networks used on a vehicle a fault in one network can affect components/functions on another. This can complicate diagnostics. The tools used for testing range from a simple test light to a Digital Storage Oscilloscope. Every tech should be able to diagnose network faults using the tool he either has in his tool box or has easy access to. We will also compare Factory to Aftermarket scan tool diagnostics. Although there are some features on the Factory tooling that aren’t available on some aftermarket tools, we will discuss alternative tests that can be done with your aftermarket scan tool.

Videos will be used to demonstrate test procedures as well as common faults. With a good understanding of how this network operates testing will be simpler. The goal of this class is to give technicians the confidence to quickly and easily diagnose network faults using the tools they have available to them.
